Laser Space Propulsion Being Developed in Belarus

14.06.2012 / 11:13

Belarusian and Russian scientists plan to create a laser-powered thruster that will be tested in the outer space by 2014.

This propulsion is designed to correct orbits of satellites. Such engines are very effective. The engine’s model was developed by the Physics Institute in association with the Russian space agency Roscosmos.

The B.I. Stepanov Physics Institute of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus— an associate developer of the laser engine — develops new laser sources and systems for various applications, studies non-linear dynamics of complicated systems, optical methods to diagnose natural objects and biological environments. The institute also looks into the development of physical and technological basics for manufacturing micro, optical, and nano electronics, develops methods to process information, designs information and measuring systems as well as control systems.
