Artist from St. Petersburg Sewed Up Lips in Support of Pussy Riot

Petr Pavlenski reminded about imprisoned musicians.

Petr Pavlenski, an artist from St. Petersburg, sewed up his lips near Kazan Cathedral in an act of solidarity with imprisoned members of female punk rock band Pussy Riot.

During the action, the artist held a banner saying ‘The action of Pussy Riot was playing again the famous action by Jesus Christ’. He also referred to New Testament’s Matthew: “[21:12] And Jesus went into the temple of God, and cast out all them that sold and bought in the temple, and overthrew the tables of the moneychangers, and the seats of them that sold doves, [21:13] And said unto them, It is written, My house shall be called the house of prayer; but ye have made it a den of thieves.”

The police officers called the ambulance and after an examination of psychiatrist Petr Pavlenski was let home.

The artist says he wanted to attract attention to situation for modern artists in Russia today, the lack of publicity and constantly growing censorship.

Russian court decided to leave Pussy Riot members under arrest until January 12, 2013. Anthony Kiedis from Red Hot Chili Peppers supported the imprisoned musicians
