Venezuela Grants Amnesty Which Could Free Hundreds of Political Prisoners.

Venezuela's acting president, Delcy Rodriguez, on Thursday signed an amnesty law that could lead to the release of politicians, activists, lawyers, and many others, effectively acknowledging that the government holds hundreds of people in prisons for political reasons, AP writes .

This marks a positive turn for the authorities of the South American country, who for decades denied the existence of political prisoners. This is the latest policy change following a January 3 US raid on the country's capital, Caracas, with the aim of capturing then-President Nicolás Maduro.

This measure is expected to benefit opposition members, activists, human rights defenders, journalists, and many others who have been persecuted by the ruling party over the past 27 years.

But families hoping for the release of their loved ones, some of whom have been gathering near detention centers for several weeks, say that acting president Delcy Rodriguez has not fulfilled earlier promises to release prisoners.

Several batches of political prisoners were released previously.
