Iran officially confirmed the death of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. They promise retaliation
The Iranian state news agency IRNA, on the night of March 1, issued an official statement about the death of the country's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Ali Khamenei. The Iranian authorities called what happened a brutal attack by criminal regimes, declared a forty-day mourning period in the country, seven days of official holidays, and also promised a response to the USA and Israel.

“With deep sorrow and grief, we inform you that as a result of a brutal attack by the criminal government of America and the sinister Zionist regime, the paragon of faith, jihad, and resistance, the Supreme Leader of the Islamic Revolution, His Holiness Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, has embraced martyrdom,” the statement said.
Forty days of mourning and seven days of official holidays were declared in the country.
Ali Khamenei, who was 86 years old, served as the Supreme Leader of Iran since 1989. He wielded absolute power, exceeding the authority of the president. He directly controlled the army, special services, the judiciary, and the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC).
In the official statement by state media, Khamenei is referred to as a paragon of faith and resistance, who led the Islamic front against tyranny for over 37 years.
Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian, in a published statement, promised to avenge Khamenei's death. “This time, with all our strength and resolve, we will make the perpetrators and masterminds of this great crime regret it,” he assured.
For a long time, the Iranian side denied Khamenei's death.
On Saturday evening, international agencies first reported his elimination, citing Israeli officials, and then US President Donald Trump made a corresponding statement. Tehran denied this information until the last moment.
Amidst the official mourning, video footage began circulating on social media showing residents of various Iranian cities celebrating the leader's death.
Iranian state media are publishing images of thousands of crowds grieving Khamenei's death.
The military operation by the US and Israel began on Saturday morning and was aimed at destroying military facilities and key figures of Iran's security forces.
In response to these actions, Tehran carried out a massive bombardment using missiles and drones. Not only Israel but also neighboring Persian Gulf countries were hit. The main targets for the Iranian military were American bases, but civilian objects were also affected: residential buildings, hotels, and airports in the region.
