Big Bank Robbery in Germany. How Criminals Used Christmas to Clean Out Almost All Lockers

Around 30 million euros in cash and valuables were stolen from the safes.

Thieves used a large drill to break into the Sparkasse bank on a busy street in Gelsenkirchen, western Germany. The robbery was organized during the quiet weekend after Christmas. Around 30 million euros in cash and valuables were stolen from the safes, police reported, writes the BBC.

A police spokesperson compared the robbery to the Hollywood movie "Ocean's Eleven," noting in a comment to AFP that it was "executed very professionally."

During the robbery at the Sparkasse bank branch in Gelsenkirchen, the thieves broke into more than 3,000 safe deposit boxes. These contained money, gold, and valuables.

Police reported that they learned of the crime after an alarm went off on Monday morning, December 29.

As of now, no one has been arrested. The criminals remain at large. Initial investigation results indicate that the thieves entered and escaped the bank through a nearby parking lot.

Witnesses reported seeing several men carrying large bags in the garage on the night between Saturday and Sunday.

Police stated that video recordings show a black Audi RS6 driving out of a garage on De-la-Chevalier street on Monday morning, December 29. The hole leading to the underground vault was discovered after a fire alarm was triggered. Police, along with firefighters, inspected the building.

On Tuesday, December 30, police cordoned off the entrance to the bank branch after a large number of customers gathered outside, demanding information.

"I couldn't sleep that night. We're not getting any information," one man told German TV channel Welt.

According to Reuters, people said their life savings were kept in the bank. Sparkasse reported that thieves broke into 95% of customer safe deposit boxes.

The bank also added that the contents of each box are insured for up to 10,300 euros and advised customers to check if they have additional home insurance.
