Trump allowed for a "friendly takeover" of Cuba

"As you know, they're in big trouble. They have no money," the US President said on the White House lawn before departing for Texas.

The US could carry out a "friendly takeover of Cuba," American President Donald Trump said, answering questions from reporters on the White House lawn.

"The Cuban government is negotiating with us. As you know, they're in big trouble. They have no money. Now they have nothing. But they are negotiating with us. And, perhaps, we will carry out a friendly takeover of Cuba," Trump said.

The US President called Cuba "a failed state, to put it mildly." He recounted that in his childhood he heard a lot about this island, and "everyone wanted change."

"Marco Rubio is dealing with this issue, and at a very high level. And, you know, they have no money, they have no oil, they have no food. And now the nation is truly in a difficult position, and they need our help," he added.

After the January 3 operation in Caracas to capture Nicolás Maduro, Trump turned his attention to Cuba. He repeatedly stated that Cuba "could be next," and the island's government "is hanging by a thread" and the US has no choice but to "come in and blow the place up." He also threatened sanctions.

In response, Cuban President Miguel Díaz-Canel warned that the country is ready for defense.

After Donald Trump threatened Cuba with sanctions, the country faced difficulties with oil supplies and flights. Mexico, for example, suspended oil shipments. In late January, it was reported that Cuba had only two to three weeks' worth of oil left.
