Siarhei Maksimenka Has Died

On March 16, the renowned Belarusian nuclear physicist, director of the Institute of Nuclear Problems of BSU, Siarhei Maksimenka, suddenly passed away . He was 71 years old.

Siarhei Maksimenka was born on August 13, 1954, in the urban settlement of Kryvichy, Myadzel district. In 1976, he graduated from the Physics Faculty of BSU. From 1986, he worked at the Institute of Nuclear Problems of BSU, and in 1996, he became a Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences.

From 1997 to 2000, he was Deputy Director for Scientific Work, and from 2000 to 2005, Deputy Vice-Rector for Science at BSU. From 1992 to 2012, he headed the Laboratory of Electrodynamics of Inhomogeneous Media. Since 2013, he had been the Director of the Institute of Nuclear Problems of BSU. He was also a member of the General Assembly of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus and an expert council member of the Higher Attestation Commission of the Republic of Belarus.

Maksimenka's scientific work focused on electromagnetism, nanostructures, and the interaction of electromagnetic radiation with materials. He authored more than 280 publications, including monographs and articles in renowned scientific journals. He was a board member of the Belarusian Physical Society, the European Society for Materials Research, and the International Society for Optical Engineers, as well as Deputy Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Nanophotonics. In 2025, he was awarded the honorary title of Honored Scientist of Belarus.

Under his leadership, research was conducted in the field of nanostructures, nanotubes, and semiconductor heterostructures, which led to the development of a new discipline – nanoelectromagnetism.

The farewell ceremony for Siarhei Maksimenka will take place on March 19 (Thursday) at the address: Minsk, Alshewski street, 12. Start — 12:30 PM.
