"We will return these trucks. I feel sorry for the Poles, the Lithuanians," he said.
Alexander Lukashenka intends to make a decision in the coming days regarding trucks with Lithuanian registration that are currently in Belarus. He stated this to journalists, writes BelTA.
"I am obliged to make this decision by Monday. There's no need to delay, I don't want bureaucracy or red tape. That's my principle: I am a systemic person and I want to resolve this over the weekend," Alexander Lukashenka declared.
He recalled that representatives of Lithuanian and Polish hauliers had previously appealed to him in writing. Alexander Lukashenka instructed the government leadership to meet with them.
"I instructed the government: go and meet with them and talk to them humanely. Sit down at the negotiating table, listen to them, and report back to me. I will make a decision, and I think we will begin the process of returning these trucks starting Monday. We will return these trucks. I feel sorry for the Poles, the Lithuanians," he said.
At the same time, he noted, the price for guarding the trucks, which initially amounted to 120 euros per day, may be reduced for the hauliers.
It should be recalled that in November last year, in response to constant arrivals of smuggler weather balloons, Lithuania closed its border with Belarus. In response, official Minsk gathered trucks belonging to Lithuanian carriers and placed them in special paid parking lots. Belarusian authorities threatened to confiscate the trucks.
On Wednesday, Prime Minister Alexander Turchin held a meeting with Lithuanian carriers in Minsk.
