It is the second unsuccessful game for Belarusian team.
On 6 May the Belarusian national ice hockey team lost to Switzerland 2:3, sustaining their second defeat at the 76th IIHF World Championship in Helsinki after 0-1 disappointment from Finland on 4 May, BelTA has learnt.
Switzerland 3:2 Belarus (2:1, 0:1, 1:0), Helsinki, Hartwall Arena, 5,249 in attendance.
The first period was dominated by the Swiss who made 19 shots with two of them being successful against the only one performed by Aleksei Ugarov to make the first goal for Belarus at the 2012 championship.
Belarusians started the second period more aggressively giving a lot of work to Swiss goaltender Tobias Stephan. The break did a power of good for Belarusians and Konstantin Koltsov assisted by Alexei Kalyuzhny and Dmitry Korobov was able to level off the game at 2:2.
Switzerland denied Belarus on several power play opportunities in the second and third periods.
Alexander Kulakov’s mistake behind the Belarusian goal gave away the puck onto Kevin Romy’s stick, who shot the Belarusian goal from the crease to give the Swiss a lead once again.
Neither Mikhail Grabovski’s shootout nor Kari Heikkila’s timeout 43 seconds before the end helped the Belarusians tie the game.
