World number one Viktoryja Azaranka of Belarus made her way to the Madrid Open quarterfinals holding off 15th-seeded former world No. 1 Ana Ivanovic of Serbia 6-4, 6-4.
Now Azaranka faces China's Na Li (No.8) to compete for a berth in the semifinal.
On her way to the quarterfinals in the Spanish capital Azaranka beat Russia’s Svetlana Kuznetsova (No.6) 7-6, 6-4 and Czech Andrea Hlavackova (No.117) 6-3, 7-6.
In the men’s event second-seeded Maksim Mirny and Daniel Nestor of Canada will play the Spanish tandem Fernando Verdasco and David Marrero in the second round.
The competitions at the €3.755 million Madrid Open clay-court complete on 13 May.
