The National Bank of Belarus reacts to the US Treasury accusations.
National Bank of Belarus will conduct an unscheduled inspection of Credexbank and will decide then on the need for further retaliatory actions. This is due to the U.S. Treasury claims about the possible involvement of the bank, registered in the territory of Belarus, in implementation of non-transparent financial transactions, said the National Bank.
Meanwhile, economist Jaraslau Ramanchuk says that the Belarusian financial authorities need to investigate the financial activities of Credexbank, while Prosecutor General's Office shall request documents from the U.S. Ministry of Finance and initiate a criminal case. According to him, there are serious grounds to investigate the bank’s activities in connection with the U.S. Treasury statement on the possible involvement of Credexbank in money-laundering, BelaPAN.
According to Mr. Ramanchuk, suspicions of money laundering by Credexbank could not appear out of nowhere. Therefore, the NBB performance of its oversight function is rather questionable.
National Bank may withhold information about Credexbank
If the controller did not notice anything suspicious in Credexbank activity, then there are questions about the quality of its supervision, however, it is conceivable that the National Bank owned the information, “saw everything, but said nothing,” said the economist.
He recalls that the Greek government gave its banks €100 billion, without informing the IMF. “Our financial authorities could also hide certain information and did not impede money-laundering operations. If not, they should prove it,” says the economist.
According to Mr. Ramanchuk, charges of the U.S. Treasury can help tighten control over financial flows that pass through the Belarusian banks, slow payment transactions, as well as limit the attraction of external borrowing.
He also believes that this may adversely affect relations with the IMF and Russia. “The damaged reputation of Belarus is not beneficial” for Russia and the banks with the Russian capital.
As it was reported before, The United States has identified the Belarusian-based JSC CredexBank, or Credex, as an institution of “primary money-laundering concern.”
