Italian-owned BelEnergiya will construct power plant in Brest
An Italian-owned company BelEnergiya is beginning the construction of a power and heating plant in Brest.
Top-ranking officials of the energy ministry and the regional and city governments, and representatives of BelEnergiya, the Italian embassy in Minsk and private companies in Italy, Russia, Switzerland and Poland attended a capsule-laying ceremony that was held at the construction site on May 31.
The project is expected to be financed with €415 million in foreign direct investment, including €50 million for the construction of the necessary infrastructure.
The construction of this combined gas and steam plant is very important to Brest, which does not have a large power and heating plant at present, Kanstancin Sumar — head of the Brest region — said at the ceremony.
With a capacity of 400 megawatts, the plant will generate enough electricity to meet the needs of Brest and other populated localities in the region, Mr. Sumar said, adding that more than 70 percent of the plant's electricity output would be exported.
The plant will also generate up to 150 megawatt-hours of thermal energy, which will be used by the city.
By burning natural gas more efficiently, the plant will make it possible to save about €50 million every year.
The plant is to become the first large power generating facility built in Belarus by a private company.
The project is scheduled to be completed in 2015.
