World number one Viktoryja Azaranka of Belarus was defeated by Slovakia’s Dominika Cibulkova (No.16) 2-6, 6-7 in the fourth round of Roland Garros in France, BelTA has learnt.
The match that was decided with the 7-4 tiebreak in the favor of the Slovak, lasted for an hour and 47 minutes.
In the opener Azaranka fought hard to beat Alberta Brianti (No.105) 6-7, 6-4, 6-2. Then she breezed past Dinah Pfizenmaier (No.198) 6-1, 6-1 and knocked out Canada’s Aleksandra Wozniak (No.58) 6-4, 6-4.
This season the 22-year-old Belarusian won 36 out of 40 games. Azaranka’s impressive run included wins in her past four tournaments: Sydney, the Australian Open, Doha and Indian Wells.
In the men’s doubles Belarus’ Max Mirnyi and Daniel Nestor of Canada moved further after defeating the American tandem Scott Lipsky and Rajeev Ram (No.15) 6-2, 6-4.
All in all Max Mirnyi, who will turn 35 on 6 July, has bagged three Roland Garros titles: together with Swede Jonas Bjorkman in 2005 and 2006 and together with current partner Canadian Daniel Nestor in 2011. All in all, Max Mirnyi has won 43 doubles titles.
The tournament in Paris which prize pot is €18.7 million this year will complete on 10 June.
