Motor fuel cost increased by 5% on June 8.
The Belarusian State Petrochemical Industry Concern (Belnaftakhim) on raised its retail prices of gasoline and diesel fuel by five percent on the average June 8.
This is the third increase in the prices this year.
Prices are being increased to support the efficiency of Belarus’ oil refineries, and is also part of efforts to gradually bring the country’s prices of goods closer to those in the rest of the Customs Union, said the press office.
Even after the increase, the motor fuel prices in Belarus remain three to nine percent lower than in neighboring Russia, it added.
Last year motor fuel prices were raised 11 times, with Normal-80 gasoline increasing in price by a total of 140 percent, 92 octane gasoline by 99 percent, 95 octane gasoline by 88 percent and diesel fuel by 144 percent.
After the prices were raised by 30 percent on the average, a large protest action called ‘Stop Gasoline’ took place on June 7. The protest action that blocked Minsk’s centre drew a wide response and made the authorities change their decision.
Alyaksandr Lukashenka in his address stated that the most expensive motor fuel should be priced at no more than 4,500 rubels, and that the prices should be raised by two or three percent per three months “if necessary,” not by 30 percent at once.
