Aliaksandr Lukashenka arrives in Venezuela to meet Hugo Chavez.
Belarusian President Aliaksandr Lukashenka is having the second day of his Latin America business trip which embraces visiting Cuba, Venezuela and Ecuador.
Tight economic cooperation
Lukashenka arrived in Venezuela on today’s morning. He is to meet countries leader Hugo Chavez. Lukashenka mentioned not once that Venezuela is Belarus’ best ally and even called Hugo Chavez his “brother.”
Belarus has cooperated with Venezuela for several years already, mainly in trade. Belarusians helped Venezuelans with construction and machinery industry establishing several joint enterprises. Venezuela in its turn supplied Belarus with oil. However, Belarus has recently ceased oil exports from Venezuela (surprisingly the decision was taken right after the visit of Vladimir Putin to Minsk which signaled of Russia-Belarus relations normalizations and — probably at least for present time — no new gas or oil wars).
According to the statistics provided by BelTA, the trade turnover between Belarus increased from $6mln in 2006 to $1.3bln in 2011.
However, Belarus and Venezuela are not just trade partners, they are also the members of Non-Aligned Movement.
Yet, the President has noticed that Belarus intends to build “strong economic ties with Latin American countries” in his interview with Cuban mass media.
The agenda of the meeting will include development of trade and economic relations between the two countries, implementation of bilateral projects in various areas. The presidents will outline new cooperation areas, BelTA reports.
Belarus mainly seeks new markets for its fertilizers. Furthermore, the construction and production is also a priority. Estimated 2,520 more apartments will be ready there by the end of June. Two brick plants and MTZ tractors production line have been put into operation this year. A plant to produce MAZ vehicles is also ready for operation. Plus, there has been launched a project of a company to manufacture road construction equipment.
“We are ready to participate in projects to diversify your economy, to create strong agricultural and industrial complexes in your country.
“We, as friends of yours, declared that figuratively speaking, Venezuela is part of Belarus, and Belarus is part of Venezuela. And I promised my friend Chavez a few years ago that everything he likes in Belarus we will re-create in Venezuela,”Aliaksandr Lukashenka said.
Brother presidents
However, Lukashenka also mentioned the relations between him and Hugo Chavez remain close and friendly.
“Chavez and I adhere to the same ideology. Those who are fighting against us propagate a different ideology. However, it is not even about the ideology. It is about economy,”said the President to Venezolana de Television.
He, as usual, complimented Chavez and called him like-mindedperson.
“Chavez has charm, he is very friendly. But the main thing is that this courageous man is ready to lend you his shoulder in the most difficult time. Not everyone can do this. I appreciate it.
“This man has a great soul, big heart and great ideas.
“He sincerely believes in the things that sometimes only he can understand.
“What Chavez is doing is the policy of the future. He is doing a great job. He has showed to the American people who live on the two continents that you can live, think and speak differently. You can lead a normal beautiful sincere and honest life. And this policy is undefeatable. Because it is just.”
Brother nations
Aliaksandr Lukashenka has also mentioned the Belarusian and Venezuelan people have much in common.
“We are friendly nations that have no problems with each other, not even a common history — neither good, nor bad — we start from scratch. Such countries begin to create an independent alliance.
“More than that, dozens of states around the world are in sympathy with us. They are looking at us. They would like to know what will come out of it. If we do it, this will be a new independent alliance of states.
“I am not saying that it will dictate its terms to the rest of the world. No. This will be a club of friends that can protect their interests on the international arena,” Lukashenka said.
Such praise is a vivid support of Chavez candidacy for the upcoming presidential elections, where Hugo Chavez is going to face a single candidate from the broad opposition coalition.
Today Chavez is seriously ill. The result of the election is going to depend on the oil prices: while they are sky high, populist Chavez’s rating will be high, too, thanks to giant subsidies to the economy.
What Belarusian projects in Venezuela are concerned, they may end with Chavez’s resignation as they are bound to one person only.
The previous day, Lukashenka visited Cuba and met Raul Castro. The next destination of his journey will become Ecuador.
