The embassy of Ecuador in the UK has received 10,000 letters from the supporters of Julian Assange, the founder of WikiLeaks, lenta.ru reports.
Assange advocates manifest their solidarity and call on Ecuador to provide Julian Assange political asylum. The letter of support was sent personally to Ecuador President Rafael Correa. The sender is American human rights organization Just Foregn Policy. The e-petition has already been signed by more than 5,000 people. Directors Michael Moore and Oliver Stone and philosopher Noam Chomsky were among the signers.
The petitioners assure that Assange is a journalist only and the criminal case against his is the violation of the freedom of speech.
Assange’s asylum request comes less than a week after the U.K. Supreme Court denied his legal team’s request to re-open his extradition case on a legal technicality.
Thus, Assange has no legal leverages left to avoid the extradition to Sweden. However, Assange and his advocated fears that in case he is sent out to Sweden, he will be immediately extradited to the U.S.A.
Assange, who is accused of espionage in the U.S.A. is afraid that he may be killed there.
