The working group on Belarus' accession to the WTO will resume work this September.
The WTO terms will actually come in full force and effect in the CES territory from September 1, 2012, said Deputy Foreign Minister Aliaksandr Hurjanau at the enlarged meeting of the Standing Committee of the Consultative Council for Foreign Investments of the Council of Ministers on June 28, Telegraf.by reports.
Aliaksandr Hurjanau said that the countries of the common economic space are in anticipation of Russia’s final ratification of a package of its obligations for accession to the World Trade Organization, BelTA informs.
Minister for Trade of the Eurasian Economic Commission Andrei Slepnev has recently said that the Commission experts are now working on a new version of the Common Customs Tariff, introduced in Russia given its commitments to the WTO. They may also reduce the level of tariff protection from the current 10% to 7.5-7.8 %. The document will enter into force after Russia's accession to the WTO in a month after the ratification of the package of agreements.
Furthermore, the working group on the accession of Belarus to the World Trade Organization (WTO) will resume work this September, BelaPAN says.
“We are trying not to lag behind,” he noted.
Belarus yet needs to complete bilateral negotiations on market access for goods and services with two dozen states, he said, noting that it would be easier now that the country had agreed to bring its tariffs into line with Russia’s within their Customs Union.
“So, I would like to ask skeptics to relax and optimists to know that Belarus is trying to join the WTO as soon as possible,” Mr. Hurjanau said.
Belarusian companies should cast away fears and start preparing themselves “for working in fair competition with foreign partners in accordance with internationally established trade rules,” he added.
Last December, President Aliaksandr Lukashenko and Russian President Dmitry Medvedev signed a memorandum under which Russia would provide comprehensive support to Belarus for the early entry into the World Trade Organization.
