Lukashenka continues traditions of the USSR ordering Belarusian athletes to win medals at London Olympics.
The President of Belarus Aliaksandr Lukashenka told Belarusian athletes that the most important thing at the Olympic Games is not to take part but to win.In this case, according to the Belarusian leader, “the triumph of an athlete transforms the country within world community, forms its positive image”.
“This is a demonstration of the success of the state,”he said.
“I want you to understand that everything happens in sports, but not at the Olympics. Men prepare to the Olympic Games and they prepare all the reserves they have. Therefore there can only be a victory. The most important thing is not to take part but to win. Here is my mandate to you on behalf of the Belarusian people", said Aliaksandr Lukashenka.
“The state will do everything for you. Conquer these awards, and all the doors in our country, including the president's one, will be wide open in front of you,”said the Belarusian ruler.
According to the President, the Belarusian athletes should leave aside all their excitement, act with dignity and show at the arenas all they can do.
“In London you will — first of all — fight for the prestige of your country, where it will be measured in the places on the podium. For sport, it's the highest level of diplomacy”, the President admonished the Belarusian Olympic team.
Lukashenka also passed the national flag of Belarus to the national team captain Kaciaryna Karsten.
