Belarus plans to import next year three billion kWh of Ukrainian electricity, 500 million kWh more than expected this year, Belarusian ambassador to Ukraine Valiancin Vyalichka informed. Belarus also plans to re-export part of the electricity to Lithuania, which stopped its Ignalina nuclear power plant a few years ago.
Commenting on Belarus–Ukraine trade in general, Mr. Vialichka said that it totaled $6.2 billion in 2011, with Belarus having a $2.2-billion export surplus. The trade amounted to $2.8 billion in the first five months of this year, with Belarus securing an export surplus of more than $1 billion. “I think that our trade will reach $7 billion this year,” said the ambassador.
This year Belarus exports more petrochemical products, farm machinery and food to Ukraine, said Mr. Vialichka, describing the rise in petrochemical exports as logical as the amount of crude processed by the two Belarusian oil refineries had increased in 2012.
Cross-border trade accounts for 26 percent of all Belarus–Ukraine trade, added the ambassador.
