Despite of blocked services, mainly bribe may help one get to an Uzbek university.
On the morning, August 1, Uzbek telecom companies blocked SMS, MMS, GPRS and WAP services leaving only voice calls operating in order to prevent university entrants from cheating at exams. The services were unavailable starting at 8:30 till 13:30 local time, lenta.ru reports.
An Internet-source Mirit.uz reported the service stop to be connected with maintenance check. However Fregana News says switching off mobile services around all the country is a common practice during the preliminary examination in Uzbekistan: instead of prohibiting phones at exams Uzbek authorities just turn off mobile services both for university entrants and other citizens.
The news agency also notes that in spite of such precautions, entering an Uzbek university depends more on well-being of a school leaver than on his exam score due to immense corruption in the country.
