6% of All Economic Entities Still Operate at Loss

513 economic entities in all sectors of the economy — or six percent of the total number — operated at a loss in the first six months of 2012, compared with 652 entities, or 7.7 percent, in the same period of the previous year, according to the National Statistics Committee (Belstat).

The net losses of the unprofitable organizations in the first six months of 2012 reportedly totaled two trillion rubels ($240.4 million), a year-on-year increase of 17.2 percent.

The share of unprofitable organizations was 9.6 percent in the industrial sector, down from 12.9 percent in the H1, 2011; 8.6 percent in the construction sector, down from 9.4 percent; 8.5 percent in the hotel and restaurant industry, down from 11 percent; eight percent in transportation, up from 7.4 percent; six percent in the communications sector, down from eight percent; 5.8 percent in the utility services sector and the social and personal services sector, down from 12.2 percent; and 5.4 percent in the education sector, up from 2.2 percent.

Unprofitable organizations accounted for 4.2 percent of the total number in the trade sector and among organizations that repair household goods and motor vehicles, down from 5.7 percent; four percent in the real estate sector, down from 5.2 percent; 3.4 percent in the public health sector and the social services sector, down from 6.8 percent; and 1.2 percent in the agricultural sector, forestry and the hunting industry, down from 1.4 percent.

According to Belstat, the profitability of sales in all sectors of the economy was 10.8 percent in the H1, 2012, up from 8.9 percent in the same period of 2011.
