or How Minsk could look like if it were more tolerant toward anything independent.
Belarusian e-magazine 34mag and Signal magazine devoted to street art presented an interesting project called Minsk Colouring Book where they painted the walls of Minsk — though virtually — with street art works.
The project may give us an idea how Minsk could look like if there were more freedom and it was more tolerant toward independent art.
However, the situation with the street art in Minsk remains poor: the area of street artists are remote outskirts of the town. But even there street art works are painted over by the municipal authorities. In the downtown, a work of street art may exist for a day or so: even it is a Banksy-style masterpiece.
When you walk in Minsk, it’s not like any European town: you’ll barely find here not only graffiti, but also street musicians. Minsk does have some, but they turn to be incidental and quickly driven away by the police.
However, it all is not so gloomy: there is a street music fest in Minsk! But it is state-initiated and to participate in it one should provide an application with short description of lyrics for every song to be performed.
Yet, just look at these photos: if all the works were real, might be Belarus’ capital would not look as... sterile as it looks now.
