Lukashenka ordered to win 25 medals, Belarusians got 13. Is it the ground for criticism?
It is wrong to put the pressure of high expectations on Olympic athletes, Alina Tumilovich, one the Belarusian rhythmic gymnasts who won the silver in the team event at the London Olympics, told reporters in Minsk on Thursday.
“Everybody expected [rower] Kaciaryna Karsten to win not just a medal but the gold medal, but she finished only fifth,” Ms. Tumilovich said. “It is wrong to put such pressure on an athlete. You can understand our leaders. Everyone wants as many medals as possible. But they should realize that this is a very responsible event and it's impossible to say in advance what will happen.”
According to Ms. Tumilovich, she and her teammates came to London not to win a medal but to show that they had worked hard for four years. The team had not expected such a result and are glad to have been so lucky, she said.
There were some biased decisions against Belarusian athletes, including boxer Siarhiej Karniejeu, who was comforted both by fellow Belarusians and athletes from other countries after his defeat in a quarterfinal bout, Ms. Tumilovich said.
However, bad refereeing was not the reason that Belarus failed to win the planned 25 medals, she said. “We won 19 medals at 2008 Beijing Olympics, and everybody wanted more now,” she said. “However, many of us were injured and some had bad luck.”
Belarus finished the London Olympics with a total of 13 medals, the smallest medal yield since the nation started to take part in Olympic Games as an independent team.
