Pussy Riot Sentenced to Two Years in Penal Colony

Three women were found guilty of “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”.

Today, the Khamovnichesky District Court announced the sentence of the Pussy Riot punk rock band members who have been held under detention since March, 2012.

Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich of Russian female punk rock band Pussy Riot were sentenced to 2 years in penal colony for “hooliganism motivated by religious hatred”, Kommersant reports.

The three members of the band: Nadezhda Tolokonnikova, Maria Alyokhina, and Yekaterina Samutsevich were captured after the punk prayer they performed in the Cathedral of Christ the Saviour before the presidential elections in Russia asking Virgin Mary to “drive Putin away”.

Russian police arrested dosens of activists who came to supports Pussy Riot near the court house.

Today, the active actions of solidarity with imprisoned Pussy Riot members are held all over the world. People organize pickets, wear same masks Pussy Riot had on during their performance. The activists of Ukrainian female organization Femen sawed down the cross to the victims of Stalin's repressions in the centre of Kyiv in solidarity with the victims of “Kremlin-priests’ regime”.

The arrest and trial of Pussy Riot members caused great response all over the world. Anthony Kiedis of Red Hot Chilli Peppers, Alex Capranos of Franz Ferdinand and Madonna supported Pussy Riot at their shows in Russian. Paul McCartney did so, too.

Many call the Pussy Riot case the personal revenge by Vladimir Putin and Russian Orthodox Church which de facto has enormous privileges and power in de jure secular Russia.

However, the new survey by the analysts of Russian Levada-Centre says most Russian consider the trial of Pussy Riot objective and unbiased. This stance is shared by 44% of respondents. 36% consider the sentence to be based on guilt proofs. 18% believe the sentence will be coordinated with Kremlin and 18% of respondents do not believe the court is just over the Pussy Riot trial, Kommersant says.
