Tallinn public transportation is to become absolutely free. Such a decision was taken by Tallinn mayor’s office. The residents of the city and also several visitors (as pensioners and students) will be able to enjoy fee-free rides in 2013, however if the decision is approved by the City Council, Lenta.ru says.
Mayor of Tallinn Edgar Savisaar suggested making public transportation free of charge in early 2012. He supposes this will grant all town residents the freedom of movement and will also improve ecology (the mayor’s office probably considers many to prefer free public transportation to personal transportation means).
The Mayor referred to the experience of several European and American states which has already implemented such ideas.
The referendum on free public transportation was held in March and 75% of Tallinners supported the initiative.
The municipal authorities claim the free public transport is to save an average 4-person family ca. 600 Euros per year.
At the same time, the authorities have to cover the expenses on the public transportation.
In 2012, the revenue from Tallinn public transport tickets is believed to reach around 20mln Euros which are one third of total public transportation expenses.
