Art-project “Some Pigeons Are More Equal Than Others” by Julian Charriere and Julius von Bismarck.
Julian Charriere and Julius von Bismarck decided to brighten up Copenhagen during the 2012 Venice Biennale. They considered making pigeons a bit brighter birds the best way do to this and started the project called “Some Pigeons Are More Equal Than Others”.
The two artists constructed a special machine that automatically catches pigeons and sprays them with garish colours.
“A ‘pigeon apparatus’ was build with this purpose. The machine works as a bird trap with a conveyor belt mechanism, ones inside the machine the pigeon get automatically airbrushed in different colors. The machine was installed for a week on a roof in Copenhagen,” says artist’s website.
Animal rights activists are — as usual — dissatisfied with such procedures despite artists’ claims that turning rats of the sky into the pieces of arts is absolutely harmless for the birds. Ornithologists say bright colouring may hinder birds’ ability to find a partner for coupling. However, Copenhageners seem to be satisfied with such bright spots in grey Scandinavian sky.
