OSCE Concerned Over Arrests of Belarus Opposition Online Administrators

The Organization for Security and Cooperation In Europe (OSCE), has expressed concern about the arrests and detentions of administrators of opposition online communities in Belarus.

The OSCE Representative on Freedom of the Media, Dunja Mijatovic, said in a written statement on September 4 that the detentions “show continued efforts to muzzle dissenting voices and clamp down on freedom of expression online.”

Last week, police detained several administrators of opposition online communities in Minsk, and one in the eastern city of Viciebsk.

Supporters of the administrators said their apartments were searched and some of their computers were confiscated.

Two of the administrators, Paval Jeucikhijeu and Andrej Tkachou, were sentenced to seven and five days in jail respectively for what authorities described as “minor hooliganism.”
