Pserident of Russian Vladimir Putin became the leader of a white crane flock for a few hours. On his way to the APEC summit in Vladivistok, Vladimir Putin visited ornithological station “Kushevat” where the experiment on leading hand-reared white cranes to wintering area by a hang-glider was to be held.
Americans were first to teach hand-reared birds to fly and lead them with hand-gliders. Now the method is used in Russian to breed threatened white cranes.
Putin made three flights: the first one was introductory, but then Vladimir Putin flew wing to wing with the rare bird species.
Previously, it was said that journalists would not be allowed at the site as the white cranes should not be disturbed by people. However, as it seen on photographs, some mass media were invited to the event.
It also was a mystery whether the President will be given a white helmet, a white coat and a fake beak — the equipment needed to mimic a crane. Putin got both white coat and helmet, yet without a beak.
Putin’s intentions to save the birds this way begot opposing views in Russian society. While people loyal to the current president praised his eco-initiative, opposition sharply stated the event has completely no practical use and arranged for media attention only. Thus, Masha Gessen, the editor of popular Russian travel and pop-sci magazine Vokrug Sveta quit her job after the refusal to write about Putin partaking in the mission.
Some mass media has already compared Putin’s leading white cranes with Putin’s diving for amphoras in the Taman Bay: then, Putin took several ancient amphoras from the seabed. However, later it turned out that action was bogus and amphoras were either put on the seabed intentionally or their position was known before Putin’s dive.
