The coach of women's shot put star wanted to win gold in appreciation for officials' aid.
Aliaksandr Jafimau, the coach of Nadzieja Astapchuk, told why he was forced to dope Belarusian shot put star at London Olympics and why he decided to confess.
Aliaksandr, did you really surreptitiously doped Nadzieja Astapchuk?
Unfortunately, it is true.
But it is insane!
The Olympic training atmosphere was so nervous. On one hand, we were blackmailed over positive doping test results despite they all were negative.
On the other hand, we were demanded a medal. And not any medal but the gold one.
Officials did much to make Nadzieja’s trainings comfortable. We were bought necessary equipment after the visit of Minister of Sports and Tourism Alieh Kachan and presidential aide Ihar Zaichkou. And we wanted to win a gold medal in appreciation.
During Belarusian tournaments this summer Nadzieja successfully beat her own records and there were no apparent ground to worry.
You mentioned it right: “apparent ground”. But Nadzieja was burning as a match, she was building up stress.
And then she actually started being hunted for... Her psychological tone was deteriorating and it affected her fitness.
An attempt we had on July 30, after a doping test, worried me. I decided that a bit of Metanolon may fix the situation.
Where did you get the banned drug from?
I am 63, I have health issues. And I know that Metanolon has good therapeutic effect.
I added some of it in Nadzieja’s coffee. I told her nothing as he could become angry with me and refuse to go to London.
Still, you knew she would be obligatory doping tested?
I knew, yet I hoped Metanolon to leave her body before arrival in London.
