The first of the plant's two units is to be built in 2017 and the second in 2018.
The main phase in the construction of Belarus' first nuclear power plant will begin on June 15, 2013, the prime contractor said in a statement on September 13.
Atomstroiexport, a subsidiary company of Russia’s Nuclear Energy State Corporation (Rosatom), is to bear full responsibility for the project.
Belarusian government officials and Atomstroiexport representatives held a meeting on September 12 to discuss the progress of the project.
Work is currently underway to excavate the plant's foundation pit. In addition, a total of 62 facilities are under construction at the site, with 14 of them to be completed this year. More than 200 equipment units and over 800 workers are involved in the construction.
“We are interested to have Belarus' vital power generation facility to be built on time,” Valery Limanenko, head of Atomstroiexport, said at the meeting.
The first of the plant's two units is to be built in 2017 and the second in 2018.
The nuclear plant will be situated in the Astravets district, Hrodna region, some 10 miles from the Lithuanian border. Its two reactors are to have a total generating capacity of 2,400 megawatts.
