The Wrestling Centre Named After Aliaksandr Miadzviedz Opens in Minsk

The Wrestling Centre named after the three-time Olympic champion Aliaksandr Miadzviedz was opened in Minsk on 15 September.

The event took place in the run-up to the 75th anniversary of Belarusian wrestler Aliaksandr Miadzviedz.

According to Chairman of the Belarusian Wrestling Federation JuryChyzh, the new sports facility will add an impetus to the development of wrestling in Belarus.

Aliaksandr Miadzviedz thanked all those present and said: “There is no sports facility of the kind in Minsk. The centre can host competitions and training practices of any level. I hope future champions will be trained here.”

At a press conference the head of the Belarusian Wrestling Federation Jury Chyzh noted that young wrestlers will start training here no sooner than in a month. He also denied the information that the national team of Belarus will train at the centre: “The national team will not train here. Now we are busy designing another training facility in Minsk which will make the home base for the national wrestling team. This centre is for young athletes.”

“The school itself is not already open, and we are now actively recruiting coaches and kids for classes. The problem is that today's generation is not as physically strong as the previous ones. Look, 40% of the university students have weak health. It is clear that they will not become athletes. But I hope that the center will raise real champions,” Aliaksandr Miadzviedz said.

The center also includes the Hall of Wrestling Fame where visitors will see the original awards of the three most eminent Belarusian wrestlers: Olympic champions Alieh Karavajeu, Kamandar Madzhidov and Aliaksandr Miadzviedz.
