Belarus to Resume Supplying Fabrics to Russian Government

Belarus will resume supplying fabrics to Russian Government departments, as the Eurasian Economic Commission has lifted the restrictions imposed by it on Belarusian fabrics.

In March 2012, the Russian Government had put restrictions on bidding for orders of government agencies and municipalities by Belarusian textile and garment manufacturers, according to Bielliehpram (Bellegprom), the Belarusian light industry enterprise.

The decision of the Russian Government meant that Belarusian companies like Kamvol, Mogotex and Stuzhka (Lenta) were unable to get orders for their special fabrics, which they normally sold to Russia.

It is due to Bielliehpram’s efforts that the Eurasian Economic Commission has lifted the restriction on Bealrusian fabrics, Liudmila Ciahlova, Deputy Chairwoman of Bielliehpram said at a press conference.

Russia is the main importer of Belarusian light industry goods and it accounts for about 88 per cent of all goods exported by Bielliehpram enterprises.

In recent months, however, Belarusian light industry exports to Russia have declined owing to the weakening of the Russian ruble vis-à-vis the US dollar.

Ms. Ciahlova also said that Bielliehpram filed a complaint with the State Customs Committee of Belarus against dumping of synthetic yarns by Turkey. As a result, the anti-dumping duty on synthetic yarn imports from Turkey has been raised to $4.5 per kg from the earlier $2.5 per kg.

In the first seven months of 2012, Bielliehpram’s exports increased by 1.5 percent year-on-year, while its imports decreased by 8.8 percent year-on-year.
