The authorities of New Zealand cancelled the visa issued to Mike Tyson, a famous American boxer.
The Las Vegas celebrity had earlier been granted an exemption to New Zealand immigration rules to speak at a November charitable event, “Day of the
Champions,” AP says.
The laws of New Zealand forbid the entry to the persons convicted to five years’ or longer imprisonment.
Tyson was sentenced to six years in jail for raping a 18-year girl in 1992. However, the officials of New Zealand make a legal exclusion to invite the celebrity.
Prime Minister John Key yesterday called the initial decision to give Tyson a visa a "marginal call" and expressed his disproval of accolades for those who had convictions for violence against women, Stuff.co.nz says.
