There are plans to complete the second phase of the project to reduce the train travel time between Minsk and Vilnius in 2013, the press service of Belarusian Railways says.
The first phase has been completed already and the route is popular with passengers and has good prospects, stated the heads of Belarusian Railways and Lithuanian Railways at a recent meeting in Minsk. The two railway operators take part in the joint project designed to accelerate the speed of railway passenger transportation between Minsk and Vilnius. Last year’s work has reduced the travel time between the capital cities of Belarus and Lithuania from 4 hours to 3 hours.
As part of the second phase the train travel time will be reduced from 3 hours to 2.5 hours, with the new schedule in place as from 1 June 2013. Belarusian Railways will reduce the travel time in each direction by 23 minutes while the Lithuanian side will reduce the travel time by 7 minutes. It will be possible thanks to the use of modern diesel trains, modernization of the railway infrastructure, shorter time required for border and customs control and different technologies used for border and customs control, the press service of Belarusian Railways specified.
In January-August 2012 about 180,000 passengers travelled in the direction of Lithuania, 52.2% up from the same period of last year.
