Pope Benedict XVI Meets with Nuncio Claudio Gugerotti, Inquires After Situation in Belarus
Apostolic Nuncio Claudio Gugerotti met with Pope Benedict XVI in Vatican on October 3. The Pope wondered about the situation in Belarus and also blessed all Catholics and all Belarusian people.
Several days ago, Apostolic Nuncio Claudio Gugerotti met with Belarusian political prisoners. This move gives a hope Catholic church may become the mediator between the Belarusian government and political prisoners what may bring closer their release.
“As a symbol of the respect for universal authority of the Holy Father and humanitarian efforts by the Holy See, the Pope representative in Minsk archbishop Claudio Gugerotti was allowed to meet with several Belarusian prisoners. They are Kavalienka, Syramolatau, Statkievich, Bialiacki, Dashkievich, Lobau and Sieviaryniec. Apostolic Nuncio met with every of these prisoners in jails, learned about their condition and listened to them. He passed the prayers of the Holy Father for them and their families,” Vatican Radio informed.
As it was reported previously, two political prisoners Siarhiej Kavalienka and Paviel Syramalotau were released after they appealed for a presidential pardon. These two persons were visited by Nuncio.
However, there still are 13 political prisoners in Belarus’ jails after the release of Siarhiej Kavalienka. Some other people were given suspended sentences or are on probation terms after release.
Pope Benedict XVI met with Aliaksandr Lukashenka in 2009 in Vatican. It was Belarus’ President first foreign visit after being long ignored by European community for human rights and moral norms violations.
