Lithuanian MP: For Some Reason, Lukashenka’s Entourage Invests Not in North Korea or Venezuela, but in EU
Lithuanian MP Emanuelis Zingeris has criticized Belarusian tycoons and members of Aliaksandr Lukashenka's entourage for reportedly buying real estate in the Baltic country's capital, Vilnius.
“For some reason Lukashenka's entourage does not seek to invest in North Korea or Venezuela, which are so close to it. They want to buy property that will be protected by EU laws, want their children to attend European universities. They don't believe in the system that they have created themselves, that's why they don't invest in it," Mr. Zingeris said.
Mr. Zingeris suggested that Minsk wanted to influence the European Union's policy through contacts between tycoons linked to the regime and Lithuanian businesspeople.
“It is beyond doubt that they are looking for contacts to try to press on the EU political system and use Lithuania, which is to hold parliamentary elections soon, to this end,” he said.
Lithuania's private television network TV3 reported earlier this week that Belarusian businesspeople Aliaksandr Shakucin and Jury Chyzh, Ambassador Uladzimir Drazhyn, former Foreign Minister Martynau and even Prime Minister Mikhail Miasnikovich owned real estate in the Lithuanian capital city. According to the report, Belarusian oligarchs are actively engaged with Lithuanian millionaires Augustinas and Arturas Rakauskas and Tautvydas Barstys.
