Aliaksandr Lukashenka said on Thursday that his political opponents' campaign to organize a boycott of September's elections for the House of Representatives “failed disgracefully.”
Speaking at the final meeting of the outgoing National Assembly (Belarus’ parliament lower chamber) in Minsk, the Belarusian leader said that the elections had highlighted the weakness of the “so-called fifth column that doesn't want even to fake fight for power.”
“It's a pity that there is still no normal, honest, responsible opposition that would care about the country rather than about the distribution of foreign alms,” he said.
Mr. Lukashenka said that in September's elections the “absolute majority of the population” voted for candidates “who advocated calm and peace in the country.” “The Belarusian people made its choice,” he said.
