The co-Chairperson of the Belarus Christian Democracy Paviel Sieviaryniec who is currently sentenced to three years of hard labour:
The European Union decisions over last two years have been consistent and they have been also executed consistently. Lukashenka’s interest is, probably, in preventing the situation from getting worse, in preserving a loophole to blackmail Moscow. He needs a channel to improve relations to make Kremlin fear. I suppose he may now be happy with it. Probably, there are some financial resources inside to keep his head above water what makes moves to the West not the matter of principle for him. Currently, it is better for him to tighten screws, to keep political prisoners behind bars. The Europeans have nothing left but to not alter their stance. Not much has changed. It is worth to be said that the EU’s position is fair. Not always it is so, but this time the stance is fair and consistent.
Did you somehow link the EU decision to yourself?
It could be a different way, but now it is important for me that those, who are currently in prisons, will be released. It is also important that for Belarus not to fence off from Europe. Because when Lukashenka does this personally as the dictator, he makes all Belarus suffer.
