German MPs Want Belarus to Clarify Some NPP Construction Aspects

Members of the German Bundestag have expressed concern over the construction of a nuclear power plant in Belarus and plan to ask the governments of Belarus and Germany for explanations on some aspects of the project.

According to MPs who represent Alliance `90/The Greens, the Social Democratic Party of Germany and the Left in the Bundestag, the German public must know the project`s details and discuss them with Belarus as Germany might be affected in the event of an accident at the plant.

As Marieluise Beck of Alliance `90/The Greens told, she plans to formally request the Belarusian government next week to provide explanations on safety-related issues and the project`s compliance with international conventions.

Eva Bulling-Schroter, who chairs the environment committee in the Bundestag, has announced plans to ask the German government about its participation in discussions with Belarus on the compliance of the project with the Convention on Environmental Impact Assessment in a Transboundary Context.

A group of German MPs met with Belarusian anti-nuclear activist Tacciana Novikava in Berlin last week to learn what the Belarusian public and independent experts think about the project.

“It`s important not only for Germany to know what is going on in Belarus concerning the construction of the nuclear power plant, it`s also critically important for Belarusian society to get information about how Germany`s power engineering is developing,” Novikava said.

“Germany is giving up nuclear energy and moving toward new renewable technologies — and figures prove that.”

“In the past few years the share of electricity generated by renewable energy sources amounted to some 25 percent of Germany`s total output, more than the share of electricity produced by its nuclear power plants. I would like Belarus to follow Germany`s example,” the activist said.
