Štefan Füle, Commissioner for Enlargement and European Neighbourhood Policy, met last Wednesday with Maryna Adamovich and Natallia Pinchuk, the wives of two of the political prisoners Mikalaj Statkievich and Alies Bialiacki, in order to discuss the conditions of imprisonment of political prisoners in Belarus and the European efforts to achieve their release and rehabilitation. Commissioner Füle has also stressed that this particular issue is critical for the establishment of good relations between EU and Belarus, New Europe
As he stated, “I fully understand the personal suffering of your husbands and your families. I call once more on the Belarusian authorities to immediately and unconditionally release and rehabilitate all political prisoners. I also urge the authorities to refrain from exercising pressure on and subjecting political prisoners to inhumane conditions.”
Finally, during the meeting, Commissioner Füle also recalled the EU's support for the cause of the political prisoners that fight for promotion of democratic values.
