The most important thing for opposition forces is not to nominate a single presidential contender but to change the “rules of game," Anatol Liabiedzka, chairman of the United Civic Party (UCP), told reporters in Minsk on Thursday following a meeting of the party's Political Council.
“As a result of a discussion, we concluded that the single candidate and the nomination procedure is priority number two,” Liabiedzka said. “The game rules are the number one priority. This means elections in Belarus in accordance with OSCE standards, free and fair elections. This is our top priority. All can unite on this platform, both those who have chosen to stay in Belarus and those who have temporarily left the country.”
That is why the UCP will continue to campaign for free elections without Aliaksandr Lukashenka, Liabiedzka said. The recent parliamentary campaign and the party's experience in general prove that unconventional steps baffle the authorities and score at least some points for opposition forces, he said.
Aliaksandr Dabravolski, a member of the Political Council of the UCP, noted that the nomination of a single presidential contender through presidential primaries could become such a step.
“There have been many critics and observers lately, but too few participate in the political process,” Dabravolski said.
“Primaries are what would enable these people to decide who will be this leader and what kind of platform he will have. The number of participants could increase many times. We'd get a new situation and a new country irrespective of whether or not we have free elections.”
Having won the support of a large number of people, opposition forces would be able to push for free and fair elections, Dabravolski said.
