A CIA source within the Venezuelan government tracked Nicolás Maduro's location both days before and directly in the moments leading up to his capture by US special operations forces. This was reported by The New York Times, citing sources.
The American intelligence service obtained information that led to Maduro's capture by monitoring his position and movements using a fleet of stealth drones. This provided almost continuous surveillance in addition to information from Venezuelan informants.
It is not yet clear how exactly the CIA recruited the Venezuelan source who informed the Americans about Maduro's location. However, former officials noted that the $50 million reward offered by the US government for information leading to Maduro's capture clearly helped.
Donald Trump also stated in an interview with Fox News that American special forces built an exact replica of Maduro's house to prepare for the capture.
