Amazon banked on glamour, well-known political figures, and an expensive deal, however, the expected hype did not materialize during the first days of its run. In the USA, over its opening weekend, the film grossed just over $7 million, showing in nearly 1800 cinemas. Meanwhile, according to media reports, Amazon's total expenditure on production, marketing, and distribution amounted to about $75 million.
Despite this, Amazon MGM called the launch successful, stating that it was supposedly the strongest documentary debut in the last decade, excluding concert films. However, film industry experts disagree with this assessment.
Business Insider calculated that the company has already incurred significant losses, and The Guardian notes: to at least break even, the film needs to gross around $100 million worldwide.
For comparison, major feature films in 2025 earned significantly more during their opening weekend in the USA — tens, and sometimes hundreds of millions of dollars.
On the international market, the situation looks even worse. In the UK, the film debuted only at 29th place, grossing about 33 thousand pounds sterling in 155 cinemas, with many screenings taking place in almost empty halls. In Australia, the film took 31st place. As a result, The Guardian concludes that the film can be considered a flop.
This looks particularly contrasting against the backdrop of Donald Trump's statements ahead of the premiere: he predicted sold-out shows and asserted that the film was a must-see and that tickets would sell out very quickly.
