In Amsterdam, the discovery of a previously lost Rembrandt painting was announced
Staff at the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam announced on March 2 that they had found a previously lost Rembrandt painting. The authenticity of the canvas by one of the leading masters of 17th-century European art was confirmed using advanced scanning technologies and stylistic analysis, the BBC reports .

The work in question is the 1633 painting «The Vision of Zacharias in the Temple». Its whereabouts had been unknown since 1961, when the painting was acquired by a private collector. Recently, the current owner contacted the museum, after which specialists conducted a two-year study.
Experts determined that the paints used correspond to those Rembrandt applied in other works from that period. The manner of layering, compositional features, and changes made by the artist also match his authorial style. The signature on the painting was also recognized as authentic. Analysis of the wooden panel confirmed that the indicated date — 1633 — is genuine.
The canvas depicts a biblical narrative from the Gospel of Luke — the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the high priest Zacharias with the news of the birth of a son, the future John the Baptist. The archangel himself is not directly shown, but his presence is symbolized by light emanating from the upper right corner. Rembrandt was 27 years old at the time of the painting's creation.
The museum director noted the high artistic quality of the work and emphasized that a special attention and depth invested by the artist can be felt in this piece.
The painting has now been handed over to the museum for long-term use and will become accessible to visitors in the coming days.
