In different regions of Belarus, the ban periods vary:
- in Brest and Gomel regions — from March 20 to May 18;
- in Grodno, Mogilev and Minsk regions — from April 1 to May 30;
- in Vitebsk region — from April 10 to June 8.
During this time, amateur fishing is allowed only with one fishing rod with one hook or one spinning rod with one artificial lure that has no more than two hooks. Fishing is permitted only from the shore during daylight hours, as well as from ice or artificial structures where there are no restrictions. It is allowed to use a landing net to retrieve caught fish. Other fishing methods and commercial fishing are prohibited.
Violation of the rules is punishable by a fine of 10 to 30 basic units, and for illegal fishing — also triple compensation for damage to nature. If the damage exceeds 100 basic units, criminal liability applies.
The State Inspectorate for the Protection of Wildlife and Flora conducts a comprehensive event «Spawning» to monitor compliance with the ban and prevent poaching. Particular attention is paid to the storage of prohibited fishing gear — a fine of up to 30 basic units is provided for their possession, but those who voluntarily surrender them are exempt from liability.
Additionally, during the spawning period, the use of vessels on water bodies is prohibited, with the exception of economic, transport, sports, or tourist purposes with a special permit. Violation of this rule is punishable by a fine of up to 10 basic units for individuals and up to 50 — for legal entities.
