Number of political prisoners in Belarus decreased to 897 people for the first time in four years
After the latest waves of pardons, the number of officially recognized political prisoners in Belarus has fallen below 900 people — a figure not recorded for more than four years.
Despite the releases, the human rights community states that repression in the country does not stop. Just last week, new mass arrests of believers and priests became known, as well as harsh sentences for eight women in the "yard chats" case.
"In the coming days, new statements regarding political prisoners will be adopted, so without an end to repression, the number of political prisoners, unfortunately, will only increase," human rights defenders write.
Human rights defenders appeal to report facts of persecution of relatives that are not yet widely known to the public. This is necessary for accurate recording of the scale of repression and providing support to those who remain behind bars.
Human rights defenders note that all 250 people released this week were previously included in the lists of those persecuted for political reasons.
