The President of International Ice Hockey Federation Rene Fasel came out against moving 2014 Ice Hockey Championship from Belarus.
Rene Fasel is voiced the position against moving 2014 Ice Hockey Championship form Belarus during the IIFH Congress in Helsinki, Finland, reports BelaPAN.
“I believe that if we go to Belarus we will contribute to make things better, to make things more open. By not going there, I believe that we would be punishing the wrong people, the Belarusian fans, other fans, and the athletes,” IIHF quotes Mr. Fasel words.
“Sport should not be used as a spearhead for political causes. This is why we have politicians.
Boycotts of sport events is against the fundamental idea of sports and it devalues the idea of sport.
This is our opinion. If there any other opinions, this congress is your opportunity to say so,” said Mr. Fasel.
The requests to do this appeared after the events of December 19, 2010 and were supported by many politicians, art workers and civil society activists.
However, Rene Fasel was constantly asserting that sport was not a tool of political influence and took his stance against moving the Championship from Belarus.
