150 years have passed from 1863's January Uprising.
The Seimas of Lithuania voted for pronouncing 2013 the Year of Uprising Against Russian Empire on May 22.
The decision was taken according to “the immense historical and cultural value that the January Uprising of 1863 has for Lithuania, Belarus and Poland,” says BNS.
The January Uprising is to commemorate its 150th anniversary in 2013.
The Speaker of the Seimas Irena Degutienė and Lithuania’s FM Audronius Ažubalis consider the Uprising to be a nodal point of Lithuanian history within European context and such a decision by the Seimas is to show historical cultural connections among Lithuania, Belarus and Poland.
“The meaning of this event was distorted during the Soviet times. Thus, the upcoming anniversary is a good chance to look at the event once again and reconsider it within the political context.”
The programme of celebration is to be developed until September 1, 2012.
