China, Cuba and Russia come out against the resolution.
On the eve of the UN Human Rights Council’s meeting on Belarus the EU mission to the UN initiated a resolution urging to immediately release all political prisoners, RFE\RL reports.
The consultation on draft resolution was held on June 26 in Geneva. The consultation was public and open to anyone; however the representatives of Belarus were missing.
The draft resolution is also calling to fully and transparently investigate all the cases of tortures and brutality against the political prisoners.
One more point on the draft resolutions is the call to stop arrests of civil activists, politicians, journalists and human rights defenders and not to hinder their movement and travels.
The draft resolution demands to fulfill all recommendations from the High Commissioner for Human Rights’ report on human rights in Belarus.
The draft resolution calls to introduce the mandate of the special rapporteur on Belarus and urges Belarusian authorities to cooperate with the special rapporteur and provide him with all the necessary information.
The draft resolution was supported by more than 20 countries.
Russia, Cuba and China severely criticized the draft resolution. Russia called it “unproductive and politically loaded.”
Belarus is the country of concern of the UN Human Rights Council.
The Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights commissioned the monitoring on the human rights situation in Belarus after December 19, 2010.
The UN Human Rights Council has prepared the retrospective reports on Belarus.
However, it was noted that the experts of the Human Rights Council face difficulties in visiting Belarus as they still do not receive the answer to their appeal to visit the country.
The style of Belarus’ authorities cooperation with the UN Human Rights Council was also called dubious.
The report says Belarusian authorities to be incompetent and not eager to cooperate with the Council.
The interactive discussion is planned to be held on June 27.
The final decision is going to be voted for at the end of the UN Human Rights Council’s 20th session.
