Rumors appeared after the National Bank’s private meeting. Officials call it ‘downright lie’.
The Belarusian government may soon devaluate the country's currency by some 80 percent to 15,000 rubles per dollar from the current rate of 8,260 rubles per dollar, local media reported on Monday citing a source in the country's Central Bank, RIA Novosti says.
The rumors on the planned devaluation appeared when Belarusian Central Bank announced its closed private meeting which suspiciously took place after Aliaksandr Lukashenka’s strict demand to rise salaries in the country up to $500 per month (in Belarusian rubles equivalent).
According to the NBB, as much as $11.8 billion will be required this year only to raise pay by 50 percent. In addition, the demand for foreign cash has been increasing steadily since June, BelaPAN repoerts.
However, the press-service of the National Bank did not commented on the closed meeting and called the rumors on devaluation ‘downright lie’ and also said the National Bank does not comment downright lie.
